Kibera member of parliament Ken Okoth has opposed proposals to reintroduce corporal punishment in schools, following increased cases of students unrest that have led to fire incidents and destruction of thousands of property.
Okoth who also doubles as the Parliamentary Education Committee member, instead supported a new system to discipline students, dubbed; “Teacher’s Advanced Training, in Alternative Techniques of Child Management, Discipline and Counselling”.
According to him, caning some students only end up ruining their education life, for they drop out of schools in fear of canes.
Okoth said applying the new system of student discipline will give them proper guidance to education life and life after school.
This follows proposals that students be caned for they have lacked discipline by engaging in indiscipline cases, ever since corporal punishment was banned in schools.
