Machakos County hosted the 2nd national United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) cultural celebrations, held at the People’s Park from September 1-3, 2016.
The three-day event whose theme was “Promoting Intercultural Dialogue and a culture of peace for sustainable Development” brought together best cultural performers and exhibitors from across the 47 counties.
Area governor Dr Alfred Mutua hosted Sports, Culture and Arts Cabinet Secretary Dr Hassan Wario who officially opened it on the first day.
Mutua said such events give Kenyans an opportunity to interact, besides providing a platform for intercultural dialogue.
He called on the performers and exhibitors to preach peace and cohesion among communities, so as to be sure of a stable and progressive nation.
“It is important that we encourage good and positive cultures amongst our people while we strive to get rid of negative ones like corruption, tribalism and hate,” said Mutua.
On his part, Wario said Kenya is a country that was rich in culture and traditional diversity which must be promoted, and urged Kenyans to embrace their cultures.
The event was also attended by Ambassadors: Dina Mufti (Ethiopia), Salah Elhamdi (Algeria), Salah Alharthi (Oman), Kelebert Nkomani (Zimbabwe), Michel Mubare- charge d’affaires DRC to Kenya among others
